Over the past few years, the use of games in healthcare education and training has grown significantly. We are thrilled to be leading the way in developing innovative healthcare tools and partnering with inspiring clients who have bold visions for the future of healthcare.
From Medibytes, a mobile puzzle game that helps nursing students improve their medical terminology skills, to the Healthy Minds Measures App, which assesses the emotional well-being of high school students through three minigames, to Saving Lives!, a game for medical professionals to improve CPR skills with real-time feedback, we’re proud of our healthcare game offerings! These games demonstrate the effectiveness of games in healthcare, benefiting nursing students, high school students’ well-being, and medical professionals’ skills. This month, we wanted to examine all of the diverse applications of virtual reality and augmented reality in medicine. This post highlights key areas where these technologies are making significant contributions, such as medical training, telemedicine, pain management, and mental health treatments.
For example, VR offers immersive learning experiences for nurses and addresses challenges posed by the pandemic, while telemedicine using VR and AR improves a patient’s access to personalized therapy and reduces the costs of treatment. But that’s not all! Discover the vast potential of VR and AR in medicine by checking out the full article.
Do video games have therapeutic benefits? In this post, we explore video games’ potential for positive impact on players’ mental health, emotional well-being, and personal growth. We discuss how video games can serve as stress relief, promoting emotional regulation and resilience. Here is the evidence behind game-based learning as a legitimate medical tool – for training and treatment. This post explores the use of game-based learning in the medical field, summarizing recent research studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.
For example, one recent study covered in the blog shows that a competition-based game in a virtual platform effectively teaches radiological anatomy to medical students, leading to improved knowledge retention. Another study compares game-based learning to traditional lecture-style teaching and finds that games result in (yet again!) higher knowledge retention in managing patient surges during natural disasters. After diving into the research included in this post, you’ll see why game-based learning shows so much promise in transforming medical education and treatment. Don’t miss out on more groundbreaking studies – be sure to read the full post.
We started out this month by recapping some of our healthcare games – and since these projects are so unique and trailblazing, we wanted to end with more! This article showcases three of our most recent healthcare-related projects.
The first project, FIRMM-pix, uses gamification to help patients stay still during MRI scans, reducing anxiety and improving image quality. Meanwhile, Mindful Market is a virtual reality experience that enhances cognitive function through daily activities and adjustable environments. The last project included in this post is a psychotherapy game for cancer patients to find meaning in their lives by going on a personalized journey, called Serein. Be sure to read the whole post to discover what these healthcare games can do for patients!
Overall, game-based learning holds great promise in transforming medical education, training, therapy, and rehabilitation. The sheer prevalence of technology in our daily lives suggests that games will continue to play a crucial role in many fields, including healthcare, and provide medical students and patients with immersive experiences that improve their lives.
