The quality of the audio and visual content in a game have a crucial role in its success. And just like other areas of game development, AI is affecting A/V creation too. We’re curious to explore how these emerging technologies can enhance what we make while also being mindful of caveats that come with AI integration. Let’s take a closer look at how AI is shaping the future of A/V in game development, from AI-powered voiceovers to the potential for AI-assisted music composition.

This article is based on an interview with our Audio & Visual Director, Josh Bartels. Throughout this blog, we draw on Josh’s expertise to better understand the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for A/V in game development. AI-Powered Voiceovers: Accessibility and Authenticity
One of the most promising yet controversial applications of AI in game development is the use of speech-to-speech technology for voiceovers. While traditional voice actors bring irreplaceable depth and nuance to their performances, AI-driven solutions like Respeecher offer cost-effective alternatives for projects with smaller budgets.
“AI tools like Respeecher have made voiceovers more accessible for our clients who want to add them to their projects, but are working with tight budgets,” Josh tells us. “By offering these options, we’ve seen a huge uptick in the number of our games that have voiceovers now, which is fantastic for engaging learners across the board.”
When it comes to educational games, the increased accessibility of voiceovers through AI can be, well, a game-changer. In particular, young learners and English Language Learners (ELLs) benefit the most from engaging narration, which enhances their levels of comprehension and immersion. However, Josh also emphasizes the importance of using AI to complement, rather than replace, human voices. Authentic representation of diverse cultures and backgrounds in voice acting is paramount, and when there’s the money for it, we believe that real voice actors should be hired for a project.
AI and Music Composition
While AI has made impressive strides in speech technology, its role in music composition is still uncharted territory. Tools like Google AI Lab’s Music LM offer glimpses into the potential of AI-generated music, but they’re not anywhere close to the level of human creativity.
In the future, Josh envisions AI as a powerful assistant to composers, streamlining workflows and handling menial tasks. But the heart and soul of music – the creative decision-making – will always remain in the hands of human artists. As AI technology advances, he hopes to see AI evolve into a real-time collaborator, empowering musicians to focus solely on innovation and artistic expression over busy work and administrative tasks.
As educational game developers, our general approach to AI is to use it as a tool to amplify the creativity and talents of our eclectic staff and enrich the learning experiences we craft for our clients.
